Located on the northwest side of Indianapolis, located at 72nd and Pollard St. this is my favorite church I have came by so far.
The church has roots dating back to 1836, the original land is still the site of the church's cemetery (more on that later). The church located now in New Augusta was dedicated in the spring of 1880.
When you drive up to the church the giant tower looms through the trees. If you are seeing it for the first time you are almost taken back simply because it is right there, and not behind a parking lot for you to walk through.

As I was taking photos of the outside, a man took notice of me and he went up to talk to me. I introduced myself and told him what I was doing, the man just happened to be Pastor Vance. He was an extremely nice guy who took the time out to tell me a little more of the church, he told me about his final sermon (he is leaving for Washington), and he even let me take photos of the inside!
It really is a beautiful sanctuary. Not only can you see and feel the history outside you can see and feel it inside as well.
That cemetery I mentioned:
Located at the corner of 62nd and Guion Rd. is the original site of the church, and the cemetery is still in use today.
The church's website can be found here. It offers a great look at the history of the church.
A nice page on the historical New Augusta is located here.
Special thanks to Pastor Vance for not only taking the time to talk to me, telling me a little bit of the church, and for also letting me shoot inside. Best of luck in Washington!

I'm curious, is that Washington DC or Washington state? :)
ReplyDeleteState, he told me but i forgot but he did mention it was outside of Seattle.
